Judge’s Commentary:
LIFE HAPPENS TO US: A TRUE STORY by Ashta-deb is a wonderful memoir that will uplift and inspire readers everywhere. The author brings us deep into her life with a compelling narrative that's hard to put down once started. Whether or not a reader has anything in common with the author, the account of human experience, grief, abuse, sadness, and victimization will pull the reader in and cause him or her to root for the author. In the end, the book satisfies because the author does find peace. The affirmations at the end of the book alone are worth the price of admission. The book is well produced. The cover photo is unique and works even though the image doesn't seem to be related to the book in a major way. The back cover blurb is excellent and the book does live up to its promise. The review excerpt and comment from the editor are both good endorsements. The author bio and photo are great. I wish there had been photos inside. I realize the author is dealing with a lot of pain, and perhaps she has few if any photos. However, since this is a true story, photos would have made the story come more alive for me. Perhaps a few could be added in future additions. The book is well written and absorbing. Though not a light or breezy read, it's written as though the author is sitting across from us, sharing her thoughts and life experience. I hope many people read and benefit from this excellent memoir.
